Tall al-'Umayri, located along the southern edge of Amman, Jordan, guarded an ancient thoroughfare. Past excavations have revealed "the most extensive and best preserved fortification system so far discovered from [the Iron 1 period] in all of Palestine" (p. 19). This volume contains reports on excavations in four fields including the Ammonite administrative complex and the western defense system. Special reports include, among others, an infant burial, the use of remote sensing techniques, and Egyptian objects found at the site.

Contributors include David R. Berge, Mary P. Boyd, Theodore W. Burgh, Joan W. Chase, Douglas R. Clark, Jon A. Cole, Larry G. Herr, David C. Hopkins, John I. Lawlor, Gloria A. London, Bethany Reiswig, Gerald Sandness, Monique D. Vincent, Jane C. Waldbaum, and Lloyd A. Willis.

About the Madaba Series

The Madaba Plains region in central Jordan is located in the highlands to the east of the Dead Sea’s northern end. It is a broad plain on the central Transjordanian plateau near the modern city of Madaba. The Madaba Plains Project series reports on seasonal findings from the excavations at Tall al-’Umayri and vicinity conducted by a consortium of colleges and universities principally sponsored by Andrews University. In its field reports and descriptions of the various seasons, this series provides analyses of such aspects as the food and water systems, sedentarization, nomadization, ancient environment, and ceramic and small finds. Among their many figures and illustrations, these volumes include photos, maps, pottery plates, and section drawings. Editors for the series include Douglas R. Clark, Lawrence T. Geraty, Larry G. Herr, Øystein S. LaBianca, and Randall W. Younker.
